Sarzotti Park Master Plan
The Sarzotti Master Plan Concept and Design was approved by the Ojai City Council in 2017. The Master Plan is the culmination of many months of discussion and public meetings with parkgoers, community members, the Parks and Recreation Commission, and City Staff. The City of Ojai now has a framework to utilize as we begin to make improvements to our community’s ‘Hub of Recreation.’ Over the next several years, the City will develop a phasing plan to prioritize each capital improvement project. The first project, completed in early 2017, was the Picnic Area Remodel, which is now being utilized by the community.
The Master Plan was developed as a guideline to meet a variety of the community's desires for Sarzotti Park. Some of the needs identified as priorities included:
- Multi-use sports courts (Basketball and Futsal)
- An updated playground
- An interactive water element feature
- A jogging, walking, and scooter path
- Improved storage facilities
- Improved park layout to maximize useable space
As the plan was being developed, it was presented before the Planning Commission and the Historic Preservation Commission for review and consideration. While both Commissions were in favor of the plan and proposed amenities, recommendations were provided for preserving the oak trees, focusing on water conservation, and ensuring that any added lighting would comply with the Dark Sky Ordinance. Additionally, a main concern expressed was for the preservation of the Jack Boyd Center.
Throughout the planning process, the fate of the Jack Boyd Community Center has been an area of concern. The updated plan includes the construction of a 3,500-square-foot complex in the vicinity of where the Boyd Center is currently located. When the aforementioned phase of the plan is reached, full consideration will be given to the preservation of the Center.
If you would like to give feedback on any of these projects, please join us at the next Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting. The Commission traditionally meets on the first Thursday of every month at 6 pm. Access a copy of the agenda and meeting material.
